In 1999, a patent was granted to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for research into the use of cannabinoids as antioxidants.
The goal of the patent was to discover a new class of antioxidants that could reduce the damage caused by hypoxia and glutamate toxicity in the brain. The cause of cannabinoid research is that they are known to easily penetrate the blood-brain barrier, which not all antioxidants can do.
The theory behind the research was that if an antioxidant was able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, then it could work to reduce toxins (free radicals) that damage important cellular structures inside the brain, neurons or cells. the skin.
In these experiments, they found that CBD acted in an unconventional way, as most neuroprotectants acted on the NMDA receptor, unlike CBD.
